It's Been A Year

It's been a year and we are gearing up for another festival season! Lots have happened over this past year included our new addition! Emma Grace blessed our lives in June and we have been learning to live life as a family. We love it!

The Amish have started boxing up their baskets for the festival already. We will be located in the same spot as last year. Come visit us at this year's Sauerkraut Festival!

Potato Festival Review

What a cold and wet weekend we had. But thanks to everyone who showed up and purchased the baskets. We did the best we could to keep them covered, and to pack them into giant trash bags! The soaps went over great, and we hope she will make some more for us next year. We still aren't sure if we will be doing the Potato Festival next year, it was more of a "food" type festival and we are all about the "crafts". We will let you know as soon as we talk it over with the families.

Saurkraut Weekend

It was so nice meeting everyone at the Potato Festival. We found that a lot of people really enjoy hearing the history of the families and the culture. Thanks for talking to us, and keeping us standing so we could warm up!!

It was a colder/wet weekend, but that didn't stop our shoppers. Can't wait too see everyone {new customers and repeat customers} next weekend at the Sauerkraut Festival!

Potato Festival

Potato Festival Information

We have been asked about the Potato Festival several times, so I wanted to get as much information out there as we can. You can stop by their website and see the details they are providing. But here is what we can tell you about the festival:

Location: Spring Valley Ohio; State Route 725 and US 42.
Dates: October 2-3, 2010
Times: Arts and Craft Booth open to the pubic at 9:00am both days and end on Saturday at 9:00pm and Sunday at 6:00pm.

We are still not sure where our booth will be located, we hope to get that information this week and we will let everyone know. Hoping to have some new release baskets available that weekend as well!

Where Have We Been?

That's a great question! The summer is a month of on the go. I'm sure everyone, including yourself, gets busy with the fun in the sun and never spend much time on the computer. But now school is back in, the summer flowers and veggies are coming to an end, which means i'm back to a schedule. The end of summer is a sad time for most, school kids at least, but it's an exciting time for Buggy Baskets!

Fall is right around the corner and that means new baskets are being made, festivals are in the works, and lots of fall smells in the air. We are so excited. Our schedule is starting to fill up with all kinds of things. Starting in September we will be making another trip to Wayne and Holmes County to pick up our first set of festival baskets. Then we will be collecting all the baskets made from Hillsboro the following weekends. The Amish are getting excited to get these baskets ready for you all. The have new designs that they are wanting to try out this year, and I know you will love them! {I do and already have my order in.}

We also have added a festival this year. We will be attending the Potato Festival in Spring Valley! Its October 2-3, the weekend before the Sauerkraut Festival. Then of course we will be at the Sauerkraut Festival, same spot.

We can't wait to share all the new baskets with you all. And we may even throw in a giveaway at each festival! Stay turned for more details!

Second Saturdays: Waynesville OH

We will be participating in the Second Saturdays Artists and Authors this weekend: Saturday June 12. It takes place in the middle of Waynesville; Sauerkraut Festival. We would love too see you there. We won't have as many baskets as we do with the other festivals, as this is a smaller gathering. But we will have several on site and lots can be customer ordered like always.

Farm Life: Baby Animals

Lots of animals are being born around the farms. This month was a big month for lots of new lives coming into the world. Take a look at the cuteness!

The goats were by far my favorite part of the day. They are so playful. They would get just close enough to look at you, then skip away. It was so cute.

Alittle change from the basket posts. I'm trying to keep updated on the farms right now, since there is so much activity going on there.

Flower Plantin' Time

I'm sure everyone is so excited it's spring! I know I am!! Ready for the flowers to bloom, and the pollen to go away so I can breathe :-)

It's planting season for the families. They are busy planting their fields and getting their gardens together. I can't wait too see how the blueberries turn out at the Stutzmans and the blackberries at the Zook plantation.

I never know what to do with the flowers once they bloom. We are a daisy flower family. We love the different colors they can bring and the nice look about them. Between my mothers house and mine, we probably have close to 20-30 daisy plants. Once they bloom I cut them and give them to people or put them in cute little vases. Since we are getting into this whole basket world, I decided this year to use the baskets as a way to go outside of the regular glass vase.

I must tell you that the baskets don't come with plastic liners. {They don't use them but we "english" have to use them...} I went to Home Depot and got some plastic liners that I could cut and make them fit in there just right. I can't wait for the daisy's to get bigger and ready to cut.

I think it would make a really cute Mother's Day/Grandmother type gift. Everyone gives flowers, why not make it more special?

Easter Baskets

I can't believe Easter is only about a week away. Usually i'm on schedule with decorating and putting together baskets. This year it seemed to sneak up on me. Is this happening to you?

I have been trying to put together baskets to give out to friends and family, but didn't want to use the traditional plastic type colorful baskets. Don't get me wrong, this is what we use here at the house for the dogs and sometimes for my husband and I. I'm wanting the baskets I give people this year to stand out and also be something they can use year round.

The Zook Family makes an oval Easter Basket that is perfect. I can fit lots of goodies in there, along with jars of Apple Butter and jams. It's a nice deep size so that the fake grass, which by the way is a pain to clean up, can be put in and items on top of it.

There are several baskets you can use for Easter Baskets. It's so much fun to stand out and get really creative with them. Which baskets would you use this year?

My First Real Apron

I found some material at a local thrift store that I thought would be really cute for an apron. I'm not one to like aprons. I don't cook much so what would the use be for one? I had talked to the Stutzman women about aprons before. It's an everyday item for Amish women. And every new bride receives a special one as part of their wedding gown/outfit. {They wanted to make me one for my wedding, but I had to tell them we don't wear them since we get to wear a nice, yet expensive, dress. I took them pictures to show them and they still thought I could have pulled it off. haha}

I explained to them that I wanted something with lots of cute color, since i'm not Amish and don't really fall into the plain black or white apron. Amanda, eldest daughter, told me to find material I liked and she would make me my first real Amish apron.

They even added a pocket for my cell phone. {We have an ongoing joke about cell phones. I always tell them to call me! It's just a big joke for them. So they added the pocket so I could get the phone if they called.}

It looks so cute hanging in my kitchen! My husbands apron for the grill is so dirty I refuse to wash it! Ha-ha

Where To Put All That Laundry....

While visiting the Stutzman home the other weekend for Maddy's birthday, we talked about what baskets were the most popular. They get many orders from places up north and one of them was for a bed & breakfast. I thought they would be ordering little baskets, but they wanted hampers. I guess they "invite" the guests to put their used towels and linens in them for the maid. Cute idea. So today I am showcasing hampers. We have had several orders for them since the festival. This year we hope to bring more then we did last year! You just never know what people want :-)

They also have laundry type baskets that are perfect for the same idea. Can't leave them out! I still have mine from college, many years ago. It was put through the wringer and came out looking just as good as the day I got it.

Next time I go up north, when I drop off the hampers at the bed & breakfast i'm going too ask to take a photo of it. I think it would be fun too see it in a real life setting :-)

Zooks New Baskets

When we went for our visit last weekend, the Zook family wanted to show us some of the new baskets they wanted to try. I told them I would add them to the collection and see what people had to say. Kitchen Organizer

This one will hold silverware and paper plates on one side or both. You can also have napkins on one side or both. What a great idea with Super Bowl Sunday coming around! Another idea that I thought would be fun is to use it for arts and crafts. I have tons of scrapbook and paints around, this would be a great carrying basket.

Mail

I bought this basket. Not for mail but to keep the dogs leashes and potty bags in. We hung it right by the front door! We also put key ring holders on the bottom and hung our keys there. It's so nice to have everything in one place.

Remote

I think my husband inspired them on this one! Ha-ha. He told them about all the remotes we English have to use our TVs, DVD players and in his case video games. Next thing we knew, they made this basket. And it looks so cute on a coffee table! I don't mind all the remotes now! {The basket is set up on an incline, it has three slots for items and you can see everything because of the levels.}

Jelly

The Zook family has two versions of Jelly basket. This is the newest one. They thought you could get a better look at the jars this way. It will hold 4 large jars.

We are headed over to the Stutzman farm tomorrow to celebrate Maddie's {mother} birthday. They LOVE pizza and only get it when we bring it over for special occasions. We are also going to make a cake and take too her. I'm sure ours won't be as good as theirs, but it's made with love and from scratch!

After many, and I mean many, emails about a catalog we decided to make an online viewing gallery. This is a good way for you too view most of the baskets that we have too offer. As new baskets get made, and they are making some really neat baskets this year, we will add it too the gallery.

If you want more information about any of the baskets, please feel free to send us an email. We have pictures of the insides and other views of the baskets. Too save space we just did the basic photo. So don't hesitate to write us about any of them. Just a reminder that all baskets can be made in any of the colors they offer. Tis The Tissue Season

It's the time of year when the world is in need of lots of tissues! I know here in Ohio we are in the bulk of winter and go through a box a week. {Gotta love sinus!} The Amish know the importance to tissues as well and have made up some wonderful baskets to accommodate all home decor.

We had a customer at the Sauerkraut Festival let us know that the plant basket the Zooks made fit on the back of the toilet and can hold tissues.

These are a great gift idea or even a nice winter gift to teachers and Sunday School teachers!

Bird Houses

Winter is finally here in Ohio! The winds have started to pick up as temps drop to freezing. Most of us put extra bird seed out for our little friends at this time. Another thing that we usually put out are bird houses. Or maybe you collect bird houses to place in your home.

These are unique baskets. They are bird houses that have a removable bottom, copper top, and are made in two sizes.

These bird houses sold so fast at the festival and at open houses. Most people didn't want to put them outside, but they are fully coated for outside use.

Boats

This was one basket I wasn't too sure about. When my husband saw this in the Zooks' Basket House he wanted it. It goes with his bathroom theme; wilderness. {He has black bears, moose, tree's, etc.}

We have this in our bathroom now and it's cute. We got it in green so that it would make the paint. I like it when guests come over and the one thing they say about that bathroom is how cute that basket/shelf is. Guess my husband has taste after all.

This is the large one, it's really really large! If you have lots more space then we have this would be a great "man" basket :-)

Basket Open House: Centerville Ohio

Last Sunday we had a Buggy Baskets Open House. We had about 100 baskets at the house to sell, and also took a few special orders. Lots of holiday gifts were purchased that day! It was so much fun meeting and seeing some of these women again.

The hostess had everything set up perfect. Adding detail to every inch of the house. We had baskets on the kitchen table, formal dining room table and on the chairs, out on the covered back porch and down in the basement on the pool table. It was over whelming and the women had many to chose from.
We had several cases of jams, pickles, apple butter and relish for the party. This is all we had left, and that was in the middle of the party. I know we sold out of apple butter.
This was too cute. The little bear in the sled was a perfect way to show how pretty and cute these can be for decorations.
The bear in the cradle was to perfect. Lots of people came up with so many creative idea's for this cradle.
These are recipe boxes. I fell in love with the red and green one. I think it would be perfect to put Christmas recipe's in it and give it as a gift. Never would have thought to use it as a candy or nut dish. Told you people were creative with these baskets!
Snacks and apple cider were provided for the guests. It was a nice social gathering for these women. You could grab a glass and walk around and pick out your holiday gifts. Now that's shopping!

Tea Basket

We are starting to think about how we would like to display everything for our holiday meals these days. And I came across a basket that I forgot about! {How that happened I have no idea.} It's a Tea Basket. It's real intention was to hold flavored tea or tea bags so that you could find them easily. I'm a HUGE tea drinker and this basket didn't quite hold the 100's of tea bags I usually get when I go to the store. But it does hold those special flavored tea bags perfectly. Since we will be decorating for the holiday dinners coming up I thought I could use this too place the Sweet N Low in them. It has a nice handle for everyone to pass around, and it's small enough to sit on the table without getting in the way.

It's not so small that you couldn't use it to put something else it in. This one that I am showing you is a Large. It's a pretty decent size to use for year round things as well. {I think it's cute on this tree, maybe I could decorate a basket tree this year!}

Pie Carriers

Thanksgiving is coming up so fast. I'm pulling out my pie books and old recipes, getting ready for the big day. This leads me to believe you all will be doing the same! And what better way to take one of you nice delicious pies then in an Amish Handmade carrier.

With the holidays around the corner, we have been giving the families lots of special basket orders. They are truly grateful for everyone loving their baskets. We have found that the most popular color right now is the green. It could be the holidays or just that you all really use alot of green in your homes.

The Stutzman Family had to dye more for all these basket sales. And it's so neat too see them hanging outside their home.

We are picking up basket orders tomorrow and giving them to their new owners very soon. Also on the books this weekend is a Buggy Basket Open House. We can't wait too see all these women! Just in time for the holidays.

Sleigh Bells

It's not even Halloween but we are already thinking holidays around Buggy Baskets. And this could be why....

For those of you who visited us at the festival may recognize the Extra Large Sleigh Basket.We had the small baskets inside it, filled to the brim. The Yoders make this basket and after talking to them decided to make smaller sizes, more economical.

The railings come off this basket so that you can use the basket year round. It's a perfect size for lots of goodies to hide.

We have had lots of questions about the smaller sizes this week- and a few orders already. These are perfect for gifts. I have had customers say they are going to use them for decorations around the house and others have said they are going to fill them with candy for holiday parties. Very creative thinking! The railings also are removable for the smaller sizes as well.

And just to let you get a scale of the actual size of these baskets, we got our family dog, Little Bit, to model for us.

Amish Auction

This past weekend we attended our first Amish Auction. Of course it was open to the public, but most of the items were Amish made, planted, or breed. Lots of people turned out and they had almost 4 mini auctions going on at one time. This is strange to me, but it makes things go faster. Plus you don't have to sit through the farm equipment if you are only there for the quilts. {This is what we were interested in.}

The Auction area is in the middle of no where, but lets be real, this whole area is in the middle of no where! The fall leaves made everything really stand out. I just love fall in this area. The colors, the smells- minus the cow smell.

Everyone should take a Saturday and enjoy a nice drive into the country. You never know what you may find.

Festival Recap

Sorry for the delay. After the festival it took us a few days to get out of festival mode and back into our regular lives.

The festival went great. This was our first one and we really weren't sure how the public would respond. We started with 900 baskets in stock, and only had to pack up about 250-275 baskets. That spells success in my book. On an average weekend the Amish Families only sell about 10, so this was a major sell for them. It was fun too tell them about where these baskets were going. Some local and some were being sent as far as Scotland. More importantly we were able to educate the "English" about the Amish lifestyle.

We all had a great time meeting people. It was fun to hear all the comments about the baskets. I think my highlight was when I had several "Longaberger Basket" reps buy tons of baskets. We are still waiting to find out the total number of people that attended the festival. My guess, near 250,000.

Sunday evening, right about closing time, we had a nice balloon launch to watch. And we had the best spot in the festival! Lots of people stopped by the booth after watching the launch.

Now that the festival is over for the year we are booking Buggy Basket Parties. Right now we have a few booked but there are plenty of dates left open to get your holiday orders in! We also have been talking to a few people about doing Bazaars and craft shows. Not sure if we will be able to do these, since they are closer to the holidays, but it's something we will keep you posted on. Also we had lots of requests to return next year to the festival and even try to set up at a few more local ones. Keep that in mind, let us know if you would like too see us at a festival near you! Yoder Family

One of the newer families to the community are the Yoders. Noah and Katie Yoder are just starting out on their new farm. Here is what they wrote in a letter to us about themselves and their family.

Noah and Katie Yoder were both in November of 1974. The children:
Henry- 12
Cevilla- 11
Eli- 8
Iva- 7
Jacob- 3
Andy- 1

We started making baskets in July 2006. Our children loves to help with the basket. We also sign them under the basket. Henry, Cevilla, Eli and Iva can help. Jacob also wants to help. We make plain, blue, green and red, sometimes purple.

I don't have photos from their farm just yet. We are still introducing ourselves as neighbors. They do have the school house on their property, which also is their basket house for the time being.

We look forward to seeing everyone this weekend at the Sauerkraut Festival in Waynesville Ohio!!!

Meet the Zook Family

Andy and Ida Zook were kind enough to write out a page of their history and all the kids names and ages. With 12 kids it's hard to remember everybody and the order! Here is what they wrote about themselves:

We moved from Wayne County Ohio to Highland County Ohio on March 14,2007. We started making baskets in the yr. of 2001. We have 70 acres of land and do some faming, but our most income is making and selling baskets.

Plant Stand

This basket is on my wish list. I'm so excited to get this basket. It's so cute and will make my living room look more like a country home.

It's shown here in plain. I am having mine made in blue to match my decor. It comes in a variety of colors. This is the only size as of right now.

You could use it for something besides a plant stand, but that is the main purpose. The legs are solid so it's made to hold heavy plants. A perfect addition to home decor.

Apple Basket

I have Apple's on the brain today. With fall comes Apple Crisp, Apple Pie, Apple Butter, and Apple Flappin's! {You have to come to the Sauerkraut Festival to know what I'm talking about.}

This is the PERFECT basket to store all your apples in. Or even pick them if you do that. It's comes in three sizes and a variety of colors.

Baskets Everywhere

For the last week we have been tagging the baskets for the festival. We have less then half of the baskets at the house already, and our single car bay in the garage is full.

There are baskets inside of baskets. See those large hampers? Lots of baskets inside of those as well. And this is half of what we will have!

We have been tagging away and logging baskets for our records. Its a real process! But I think it will be worth it. While we were busy tagging and loading boxes the family dog decided to take a long nap on one of the mud rugs- which we will have a few of those as well.

I am working on getting a catalog put together for online viewing. Also in the works is getting a page setup with care for the baskets and history pages of a few of the families.

Cradle

I never realized the Stutzman family made baby doll cradles before. It was only when Susan, age 6, showed them too me. They were on the top shelf and I don't always look up. She is always playing with her dolls. {Of course they don't have faces.} These will make the perfect gift for a young girl! Or even someone who collects dolls.
They come in 3 sizes; Small Medium and Large. They come in different colors, and with or without stain.

Susan wanted to put her babies into the photos. And I was so excited she was willing to let her baby down for a few minutes ;-) Don't you think these little cradles would make a little girl happy?!

Gathering Baskets

This past weekend we started gathering baskets for the Sauerkraut Festival. One family had boxes ready for us, other families are still making them in between harvest. It's a very busy time for them right now. But rest easy that there will be lots and lots of baskets for the festival. {You should see the garage!}

Sometimes our Amish friends get really creative making their baskets. Maybe you want a basket that also would make the perfect decoration piece. This basket is too cute to pass up. They are great to hold pine cones in for a nice table decoration. In the fall you can decorate them up with mini pumpkins. {That's my personal favorite.} They come in a variety of colors. Also available with or without stain.

Market Basket

This basket has a special meaning to us. My mom actually helped design this basket. She told them what she wanted, and had a little drawing, and they made one up for her. After a few of our friends and family saw this they wanted one as well. So the Market Basket was born. It's a really popular basket. They make it in a variety of colors. Here it is shown in plain. They had sold one with colors already.
This is a great basket for anything. I have heard people say they keep blankets and pillows in it. Others have told me they use it for outings with the kids. We use ours for when we travel, it's great for carrying all the camera parts!

Flag Basket

It was brought to my attention today that I haven't updated with anymore pictures. With it being a holiday weekend I have been doing the usual "holiday" rounds. Since we are coming into Labor Day I thought I would share one of the Red White and Blue baskets.

This is the Small Flag Basket. I love love love this basket. Since my kitchen is American Flag, this was the perfect "anything basket". You can store fruit in it, breads, and even an assortment of tea's. They make this basket in a Large and Mini size. Perfect for anything!

We are finally able to post some of the baskets we offer. {This was my fault really. I took over 400 photos and needed to sort through them.}

These photos were taken of the baskets the Zooks family makes. We enjoyed a nice sunny, and very cool for Ohio, day. I don't know who had more fun! Us taking the photos or the Zook children watching us placing the baskets for the photos. Here is a small sample for you all to enjoy for now. Lots more coming. {Remember the 400 photos?}
